Springer Spaniels Think They Are Human
English Springer Spaniel as a breed of dog is very intelligent and learn things fast. The Springer is the right choice for either a city or country home because they are so eager to please, loyal and like people. Many owner find humor in their energetic and playful animals that bring a smile to their faces. With proper training the can excel in agility, tracking, retrieving, obedience, hunting, and field trials. They are the perfect choice for families because they are so wonderful with children. Children should be supervised with all breeds of dogs.
The Springer brand of dogs are generally friendly and always looking to make their owners happy. Some people have compared their temperament to the popular Golden Retriever. If it is what their families are doing, they are perfectly content with just laying around the house. They are very flexible and acclimate easily to various activity levels, as long as they are allowed to be with people as much as possible. As a breeder we have raised many puppies and we can personally definitely testify to their high levels of affection!
Normally weighing between 35-55 pounds at adulthood this is the English Springer Spaniel breed which is medium in size. They are generally very strong dogs that live anywhere between ten and fourteen years. Field bred Spingers have short hair and are generally more active than the show bred types. All Springers have their tails docked shortly after birth, but the length of the tail differs between two “lifestyles.” The tails are docked shorter for Springers who are shown, whereas the working, field-bred Springers have longer tails so as to be an efficient signal for hunting.
English Springer Spaniels generally have two different variations of colored fur which are either black and white or liver and white. A tri-color combination exists, charactized by a liver, white, and black coat, but this combination occurs infrequently and only results when the sire and dam are both tri-color as well. These are easily recognised by the white flash that runs down the middle of their faces.
If you need a good hunting dog, with plenty of energy, who is ready to sniff out some ‘game’, English Springer Spaniels are the breed for you. Springers have long been used as waterfowl and small game hunting dogs so they enjoy outdoor activities and being around water. Because they are an old breed, they have been a favorite canine for many years. These canines are often regarded as one of the oldest and best established gun dog and hunting breeds.
So I hope you can see why we think Springers are a wonderful fit for many different situations, lifestyles, and families. We have seen how easily these adoring animals are accepted as a part of any family.
